Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTIONThe role is mainly responsible for performing tasks related to the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery service, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of these processes.RESPONSIBILITIESOperates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization in accordance with The Department of Health, OSHA, CDC, and AORN standards.Maintains appropriate records, and monitors quality control and infection control standards.Provides asset management and support of surgical instruments and trays belonging to or consigned to the facility.Accurately handles and cares for instruments appropriately, including the appropriate selection of cleaning agents, lubricants, examination for function.Retrieves malfunctioning instruments and ensures repairs are completed.Correctly peel‑pack supplies/instruments, wrap instruments for sterilization, and inspect each instrument for use, function, completeness, and cleanliness.Coordinates with the Materials Department to ensure facility sets are stocked to PAR levels.Ensures safe care to patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to all FSC policies, procedures, and standards and quality of service.Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency.Supports department‑based goals which contribute to the success of the organization.Communicates with operating room staff to provide required instruments.Reports damaged or malfunctioning equipment to CSSD Manager and Material Manager and follow the process for replacement.Resources to nursing staff in all departments regarding proper sterilization techniques.Clean, set up, sterilize and distribute instruments as scheduled on each shift.Maintains records for QA and sterilization.Complies with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards.Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: the use of protective barriers, handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately, and hand washing as appropriate.ACCOUNTABILITIESMaintains and holds accountable for the inventory of material supplies and equipment, maintaining records for ordering and replenishments.Manages and plans validation tests of decontamination equipment, and ensures appropriate documentation of activities and results.Compiles and is accountable for all required documents and checks delivery notes against goods delivered for accuracy, and records non‑conformance.Communicates in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family, and other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status.QUALIFICATIONSExperience:Required: NLT 2 years experience in sterile services (CSSD) field; in a health care environment.Required: Current knowledge of CSSD systems management, quality assurance, and procedures.Desired: N.A.Educational Qualification:Required: Associate degree in a health‑related field with an emphasis on microbiology. Current National License. OR Successful completion of a certified CSSD training program. Good understanding of medical terminology.
