OverviewJob Title:Math TeacherType:PermanentDepartment:AcademicLine Manager:Head of SecondaryFunctional Reporting : N/ARationaleThe purpose of the role of Math Teacher is to promote a love for students of all abilities at the school. They must share the responsibility for planning, teaching and assessments of the subject that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential as well as raise the standards of student attainment and achievement. They must take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy and articulacy as well as set high expectations and standards which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils. The Math Teacher will be a suitably qualified educator with a proven capacity to lead and effectively deliver teaching and learning to a very high standard. They will be accountable for ensuring that children are inspired, motivated and equipped to make as much progress with their learning as possible and as independently as possible. The incumbent will work closely with colleagues and support the work of the school. The Math Teacher will promote and model good relationships with students, colleagues and parents. They will require initiative, be empathetic and proactive, with a personable and positive character. The post holder will be required to have a positive impact on the work of the school e.g. through subject leadership and extra-curricular activities.Key Duties and Areas of ResponsibilityLEARNING AND TEACHINGSet high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupilsEstablish a safe and stimulating environment for pupils, rooted in mutual respectSet goals that stretch and challenge pupils of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositionsDemonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviour which are expected of pupilsPromote good progress and outcomes by pupilsBe accountable for pupils’ attainment, progress and outcomesBe aware of pupils’ capabilities and their prior knowledge, and plan teaching to build on theseGuide pupils to reflect on the progress they have made and their emerging needsDemonstrate knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn and how this impacts on teachingEncourage pupils to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work and studyDemonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledgeHave a secure knowledge of the relevant subject(s) and curriculum areas, foster and maintain pupils’ interest in the subject, and address misunderstandingsDemonstrate a critical understanding of developments in the subject and curriculum areas, and promote the value of scholarshipDemonstrate an understanding of and take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English, whatever your specialist subjectPlan and teach well-structured lessonsImpart knowledge and develop understanding through effective use of lesson timePromote a love of learning and children’s intellectual curiositySet homework and plan other out-of-class activities to consolidate and extend the knowledge and understanding pupils have acquiredReflect systematically on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teachingContribute to the design and provision of an engaging curriculum within the relevant subject area(s)Contribute to the development of schemes of work and department resourcesAdapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupilsKnow when and how to differentiate appropriately, using approaches which enable pupils to be taught effectivelyHave a secure understanding of how a range of factors can inhibit pupils’ ability to learn, and how best to overcome theseDemonstrate an awareness of the physical, social and intellectual development of children, and know how to adapt teaching to support pupils’ education at different stages of developmentHave a clear understanding of the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs; those of high ability; those with English as an additional language; those with disabilities; and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support themMake accurate and productive use of assessmentKnow and understand how to assess the relevant subject and curriculum areas, including internal and external assessment requirementsMake use of formative and summative assessment to secure pupils’ progressUse relevant data to monitor progress, set targets, and plan subsequent lessonsGive pupils regular feedback, both orally and through accurate marking, and encourage pupils to respond to the feedbackManage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environmentHave clear rules and routines for behaviour in classrooms, and take responsibility for promoting good and courteous behaviour both in classrooms and around the school, in accordance with the school’s behaviour policyHave high expectations of behaviour, and establish a framework for discipline with a range of strategies, using praise, sanctions
