Job Description
Position OverviewAssistant Professor – IchthyologyThe Department of Bioloy (College of Science, UAEU) invites applicants for a full‑time Assistant Professor specializing in Ichthyology. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in fish biology, general biology, fisheries science and related disciplines, with molecular applications. The position also requires conducting independent research, publishing in peer‑reviewed journals, supervising students, and contributing to the academic and service mission of the department.Key ResponsibilitiesTeach core and elective courses in Ichthyology, Fish Ecology, Fisheries Biology, Aquaculture, General Biology, and related subjects.Develop new courses aligned with departmental needs and current scientific advances.Supervise undergraduate research projects and advise graduate students.Prepare syllabi, course materials, lab manuals, and assessments.Incorporate fieldwork, laboratory training, and experimental learning into the curriculum.Conduct high‑quality research in Ichthyology or related areas such as fish systematics and taxonomy using DNA barcoding, fish physiology and behavior, and fisheries management and conservation of freshwater and marine species.Publish research articles in reputable peer‑reviewed scientific journals.Seek external funding through grants, collaborations, or research partnerships.Maintain active involvement in fieldwork, specimen collection, and long‑term monitoring projects.Required QualificationsPh.D. in Ichthyology, Fisheries Science, Zoology, or a closely related field.Minimum three years of teaching or postdoctoral research experience in Ichthyology and/or aquatic sciences.Demonstrated research productivity with publications in relevant scientific journals.Experience conducting fieldwork and using standard ichthyological sampling methods.Strong communication and academic writing skills.Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.Preferred QualificationsExperience supervising graduate students.Evidence of successful grant writing or research funding.Expertise with modern analytical tools (e.g., GIS, genetic analysis, bioinformatics).Experience managing aquatic facilities or museum collections.Engagement with fisheries agencies, conservation organizations, or industry partners.CompetenciesDeep knowledge of fish taxonomy, ecology, and general biology.Experience integrating fieldwork, laboratory techniques, or modern analytical tools (eDNA, microscopy, bioinformatics).Strong teaching and mentoring abilities.Research innovation and problem‑solving skills.Commitment to scientific integrity, sustainability, and biodiversity protection.Ability to balance teaching, research, and service responsibilities effectively.Minimum QualificationApplicants must have an earned doctorate in the applicable field. The ability to teach undergraduate courses is a must.
