Job Description
The Consultant Physician is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence-based care; effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under the post holder’s care. The Consultant Physician is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.ResponsibilitiesManagerial/AdministrationSupports, implements, and follows all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and proceduresHelps lead and implement the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processesParticipates in the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processesAssists with scheduling and supports the Division Chief in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all timesAttends Divisional meetings as requiredAssists the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriateAssumes other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division ChiefTechnicalDiagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the post holder’s specialty. The Consultant Physician’s clinical duties include but are not limited to the following:oOversees the clinical activities of the junior medical staff and is assumes responsibility for the care they provideoComplies with all established hospital polices regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow up practicesoPractices appropriate utilization of the organization’s resourcesoLeads ward round; reassesses both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis, in line with established best practiceoAccurately documents all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established proceduresoRegularly reviews results of all investigations and modifies treatment as requiredoLiaises with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as requiredoActively participates in multi-disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patientsoEnsures preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consentoAccepts clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk in patients, and patients referred from other hospitalsoParticipates in and ensures the provision of out of hours (on call) coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as requiredoCommunicates clinical information to patients and the patient’s family and friends (with consent of the patient) in a timely manneroMaintains a good working relationship with members of staff and promotes collaboration and a team-based approach to patient careoPerforms other clinical responsibilities as assignedQuality & SafetyHelps lead quality improvement within the DepartmentSupports a culture of regular audit and encourages the use of audit results for improving clinical practiceSupports the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidentsEducationFosters a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the Department by:oPromoting and assisting in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff (required)oFacilitating the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialtyoShowing commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME)oPromotes and participates in clinical research and publicationoKeeps abreast of the current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industryQualificationsQualification :-Special Certificate:-Required:a. Tier 1: NLT 2 years relevant experience as a consultant or equivalent post board certification.b.
