Through our member companies, including SMEC and Robert Bird Group, we deliver high-impact engineering and design solutions across transport, water, energy, and cities.About the RoleWe are looking for a Senior Tunnel / Structural Engineer to lead design delivery for tunnelling projects, including structural support systems and permanent lining.Key ResponsibilitiesPerform detailed design and analysis of tunnels, shafts, caverns, and underground structuresDeliver designs using TBM, NATM/SEM, and Cut-and-Cover construction methodsDevelop, verify, and review design calculations, models, and technical outputsPrepare and review complex technical reports and design documentationEnsure designs meet client requirements, technical standards, and HSEQ requirementsCoordinate with geotechnical, structural, and multidisciplinary teamsSupport drawing production and ensure compliance with SJ proceduresIdentify risks, constraints, and opportunities to improve design outcomesContribute to proposals, tenders, and business development activitiesProvide guidance and technical support to junior engineersRequirementsBachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering6-10 years of experience in tunnelling and underground infrastructure projectsStrong experience in tunnel design, including lining and support systemsExperience with TBM, NATM/SEM, and/or Cut-and-Cover methodsFamiliarity with relevant international standards and specificationsExperience with design and analysis tools (e.g. PLAXIS, MIDAS, or similar)Strong technical reporting and communication skillsAbility to work independently while contributing to team deliveryWhy Join SJJoin a global, multidisciplinary consultancy shaping sustainable, people‑centric environments across 40+ countries.
