OverviewNew York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in remote sensing to document and analyze spatial and temporal trends in coastal change in the United Arab Emirates and surrounding Arabian Gulf nations. The Arabian region has rapid population growth and urbanization along coastlines, with coastal modification through infilling, reclamation, channel and inland waterway dredging. The candidate will utilize past and contemporary imagery to document and analyze these trends.ResponsibilitiesWork under the supervision of Prof. John Burt, head of the NYUAD Marine Biology Lab, within the Center for Interacting Urban Networks (CITIES) and related research centers.Collaborate with researchers across CITIES, the Marine Biology Laboratory, ACCESS, CGSB, and WRC to integrate remote sensing data with studies on ecological and social impacts of urbanization.Document and analyze coastal change in recent decades, assess positive and negative consequences of coastal development, and develop policy recommendations to enhance sustainability.QualificationsPhD in environmental science, geospatial sciences, or related fields; first-author publications required (masters candidates may be considered with strong publication records).Experience with Google Earth Engine and spatiotemporal land-use change; ability to integrate remote sensing with GIS is preferred.Ideal candidates will have experience analyzing diverse coastal habitat and infrastructure types; groundtruthing experience is a plus, especially with boating/SCUBA.Terms and BenefitsThe position is scheduled to begin on 1 Sept. 2022 for two years, with possible renewal dependent on performance and budgets. Salary will be contingent on experience and includes a housing allowance, annual flights, tuition for children (if relevant), and medical insurance.
